National Chess Grandmaster Sharing Session Held at Putuo Branch of Shanghai Chess Academy

Shanghai, July 7th – In light of the ongoing 2023 FIDE Women’s World Championship Tournament in Shanghai, an insightful sharing session was organized at the Putuo branch of the Shanghai Chess Academy. Notable attendees included Dana Rez, head of Chinese chess women and deputy director of the FIDE Management Committee, as well as Niss-Ozola, grandmaster Arik Gerson, and local young chess players.

The event commenced with a warm welcome speech by Gu Weiling, the director of the Shanghai Putuo District Sports Bureau. Weiling took the opportunity to highlight the importance of chess and card sports in the region while shedding light on the initiatives undertaken by the Putuo Branch of the Shanghai and Putuo District Chess Academy. Established in 2019, the Shanghai Chess Academy Putuo Branch stands as the sole area-owned chess academy in the region. In its efforts to promote intellectual sports, the academy has successfully introduced its public welfare project into over 40 nursery schools, primary schools, and secondary schools in the Putuo Area.

Dana Reznis-Ozola, a highly regarded female grandmaster and former Minister of Finance for Latvia, graced the occasion with her presence. Despite her hiatus, Reznis-Ozola impressively represented Latvia in the National Chess Olympiad held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Interestingly, she emerged victorious against China not once, but four times in world chess, notably defeating the formidable grandmaster Hou Yifan. During the sharing session, Reznis-Ozola generously imparted her wealth of chess knowledge to the attentive young players. She delved into various important aspects of the game, such as how to learn from losses and victories to enhance personal growth, as well as the significance of adopting the opponent’s perspective during strategizing. Additionally, Reznis-Ozola drew correlations between chess and life, emphasizing the valuable life lessons and inspiring strategies that can be gleaned from the game.

To conclude the session on a high note, Reznis-Ozola engaged in a thrilling one-to-many battle with Arik Gerson, captivating the audience with their exceptional chess prowess. A young local chess player from Shanghai also had the privilege of competing against these esteemed grandmasters, elevating the experience for all involved.

This enlightening sharing session at the Putuo branch of the Shanghai Chess Academy served as a platform for budding chess enthusiasts to interact with and learn from distinguished chess personalities.
