Nuno Pinto da Costa, grandson of the late FC Porto president Jorge Nuno pinto da Costa, has voiced strong criticism of the club’s current leadership and coaching decisions. In an interview on the ’last bastion’ podcast,he questioned the suitability of Martín Anselmi as FC Porto’s coach.
The son of Alexandre Pinto da Costa also suggested that had his grandfather won the recent elections against andré Villas-Boas, the club would be in a “much better” position. He further commented on Francisco Conceição‘s loan to Juventus and revealed how Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa kept his illness private.
Legacy of a President
“The president fought until the end, remaining faithful to his principles and beliefs,” Nuno Pinto da Costa said. “Even in his final days,he strived for FC Porto, his great passion. He always sought to contribute and build. It is our duty to respect and share this immense legacy from someone who transformed a club facing numerous difficulties into a European champion, elevating it to a global level.”
A Private Battle
Pinto da Costa’s grandson revealed the former president’s decision to keep his illness private. “The president never used his illness as a platform, never sought sympathy. In fact, he didn’t make it public that he was battling a disease. Even the family was largely unaware. He bore the suffering alone, sparing us some of the pain. I am fully convinced that had he won the elections, the club would be in a much better state now.”
Identity and Mystique
Addressing the team’s current performance, he stated, “It’s football; the ball can either hit the post and go in or bounce out. what’s crucial is maintaining the identity, the fighting spirit, the mystique, which is currently lacking at FC Porto. This example must come from the top. It’s unfair to solely blame the players. Identity and mystique must be instilled from leadership.”
Doubts About the Coach
Nuno Pinto da Costa expressed reservations about the current coach. “You can’t bet everything on a coach who, from my personal perspective, isn’t the right fit for FC Porto. Anselmi had no prior experience in Europe, and nobody knew him. We are potentially talking about one of the most expensive coaches in FC Porto’s history.”
Future Coaching Plans
He also criticized the club’s publicly stated plans for the coaching position in the 2025/26 season. “How can you tell a coach that his position is secure for the following year, regardless of his performance? this is happening with crucial games against benfica approaching, games that could determine whether we finish third, fourth, or even second. Announcing a coach’s future stability undermines the present.”
Conceição’s Loan to Juventus
Regarding Francisco Conceição’s loan, he said, “The entire process leading to Francisco Conceição’s loan to Juventus was mishandled. Anyone who understands football can see his outstanding talent. How can Francisco Conceição thrive under a leadership that mistreated his own father and a coach who substituted him in the manner he did?”
