The Ministry of Public Security’s statistics reveal that as of June 2023, the total number of motor vehicles in the country has reached a staggering 426 million. Out of these, 328 million are cars, and the number of new energy vehicles has reached an impressive 16.2 million.
In the first half of 2023, the nationwide registration of new motor vehicles stood at 16.88 million, indicating a year-on-year increase of 1.9%. Specifically, automobile registrations reached 11.75 million, experiencing a year-on-year growth of 5.8%.
By the end of June, the country had a total of 16.2 million new energy vehicles, which make up 4.9% of the overall vehicle count. Among these, pure electric vehicles accounted for 12.594 million, representing a significant 77.8% of the total new energy vehicles. Notably, during the first half of the year, there were 3.128 million newly registered new energy vehicles, marking a remarkable year-on-year growth of 41.6%, reaching a record high. Furthermore, the new registrations of new energy vehicles accounted for 26.6% of the total new vehicle registrations.
In terms of the concentration of vehicles in cities, 88 cities across the nation have more than 1 million cars, with 41 cities surpassing 2 million cars, and 24 cities boasting over 3 million cars.
The market for used cars remains active, with a total of 11.34 million motor vehicle transfer registrations conducted in the first half of 2023. Notably, 1.57 million used passenger cars were directly handled and registered in various locations across the country. This streamlined process has facilitated the handling of issues related to used cars and promoted their circulation.
Furthermore, as of June, the total number of motor vehicle drivers nationwide reached 513 million. The introduction of the “light trailer” (C6) license model has also benefited the masses, as 950,000 people have obtained this license type. The C6 license allows for the operation of small trailers, enhancing convenience for travel in recreational vehicles (RVs). Additionally, local public safety and traffic management departments have actively promoted online traffic management services, allowing individuals to process transactions such as replacing a driver’s license, obtaining temporary number plates, and more, from the comfort of their homes.
