Los Angeles is grappling with escalating tensions as protests over immigration enforcement continue.Jamie McBride,head of the Los Angeles Police Protective League,representing the city’s officers,has strongly criticized both city and state officials’ handling of the situation. The police union role is now front and center.
McBride, a 35-year veteran of the LAPD, issued a stern warning to potential instigators. “If you come here and engage in anything other than a peaceful protest, if you turn to any form of violence, you will be arrested, and we will track you down,” McBride said. He emphasized the abundance of surveillance cameras in the city.
The protests, sparked by recent arrests of criminal undocumented immigrants, have drawn sharp reactions.McBride asserted that while LAPD officers are managing,a firm crackdown on those causing trouble is necessary. He also took aim at California Gov. Gavin Newsom for resisting federal intervention.

“Absolute idiot,” McBride said of Newsom, citing high taxes and crime rates in California. He accused Newsom of fueling the problem, despite the governor’s expected 2028 presidential ambitions. McBride also criticized Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, saying she is “overwhelmed” and “being a little too political.” He urged her to request federal assistance from President Trump if needed.

In response, Diana Crofts-Pelayo, a spokeswoman for Newsom, stated that violent and property crime in California have decreased in recent years, and that other states have higher homicide rates. She also noted that California’s taxes are “near the national average for most.”
Bass’ office has not yet issued a statement.
