The government sets next year as the first year of ‘carbon neutrality in 2050 and the national greenhouse gas reduction goal in 2030’, and is setting out to create a foundation for achieving the goals.

By enacting a special law, we plan to actively support related companies and significantly increase the number of eco-friendly vehicles, this is Reporter Paeng Jae-yong.

In October, the government confirmed the carbon-neutral plan to reduce greenhouse gas by 40% compared to 2018 by 2030.

Five government ministries including the Ministry of Environment jointly announced the New Year’s work plan, which is a challenging goal that can only be achieved by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 300 million tons, and this action plan started in earnest.

<한정애 / 환경부 장관> “The first core task is the transition of social and economic structures to carbon neutrality. To realize carbon neutrality, we will promote a major transformation across all sectors of society, and the government will actively support it.”

Conversion in five fields, including industry, energy, transportation, infrastructure, and waste, is a key task, and the government plans to enact a special law to grant special cases to related companies.

Pollution-free vehicles and eco-friendly ships are also greatly expanded.

<한정애 / 환경부 장관> “We will accelerate carbon neutrality in the transportation sector by creating a more convenient charging environment than gas stations and by opening the era of 500,000 zero-emission vehicles next year with efficient financial support.”

In this work report, a number of tasks to be pursued at the level of five ministries were presented, such as revising relevant laws for the supply and expansion of new and renewable energy, a pilot project to build a ‘hydrogen port’, and implementation of the climate change impact assessment system.

The government is planning to implement the ‘Carbon Neutral Practice Point System’ so that the general public can practice carbon neutrality in their daily life, accumulating points by using a multi-use container or renting an eco-friendly car.
