Tax Law Implementation Faces Court Scrutiny
The Federal Government of Nigeria is facing a legal challenge in the High Court of Justice of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) regarding the planned implementation of new tax laws scheduled for January 1, 2026. The Incorporated Trustees of African Initiative for abuse Public Trustees initiated the suit, seeking a court order to halt the implementation until a full hearing can be conducted.
Plaintiffs seek Interim Injunction
The plaintiffs filed an Ex Parte motion requesting an interim injunction to prevent the government from proceeding with the new tax laws while the substantive suit is under consideration. They also requested the court prioritize a swift hearing and resolution of the core legal arguments.
Respondents Named in the Suit
The suit names several key entities as respondents, including the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the President of Nigeria, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the president of the Senate. Additional defendants include the Speaker of the house of Representatives and the National Assembly management.
