Ninja Gaiden 4, showcased at a recent Xbox event, offers a fresh start for the series. Players take on the role of Yakumo, a ninja tasked with saving Tokyo from corruption. The game emphasizes extreme hack-and-slash action against cybernetic demons.
Yakumo wields swords and throwing knives, and can briefly transform into a demonic raven for increased power. The combat system allows players to string together visually impressive combos, including an air recovery ability.
Along the way, Yakumo meets allies who provide power-ups and combat advice. One character is voiced by Brandon Keener.
The game’s violence is cartoonishly over the top. Dismembering enemies becomes absurd, eliciting laughter during a hands-on demo.Developers say this tension between seriousness and goofy violence is intentional.
“Ninja gaiden has always been known as a very violent game, but we didn’t want to just make it grotesque,” saeid Yuji Nakao, game producer and director at PlatinumGames. “Because if we did that, you’d get tired of it.”

Team Ninja partnered with PlatinumGames to develop Ninja Gaiden 4. The influence of PlatinumGames, known for Bayonetta, brings a campy element to the game.
“When we were working with PlatinumGames,” said Masakazu Hirayama, the producer and director at Team Ninja, “We wanted to bring their unique style approach to the action genre and inject that into the series.”
With a new generation of gamers familiar with titles like Bayonetta, and older fans remembering Ryu Hayabusa, the collaboration aims to appeal to a broad audience.
“Ninja Gaiden is about having a very diverse tool set that allows you to feel like that ultimate super ninja,” Hirayama said. “And I think you’ll see that the new protagonist and his new tool set opens up a lot of new possibilities.”
