Nintendo Launches NSO 18+ App for Adult Gamers in Japan

Nintendo to Launch 18+ App on Nintendo Switch Online in Japan

Many of Nintendo’s popular IPs and game consoles are known for providing gaming experiences suitable for all ages. However, the company is now set to launch an 18+ App for its subscription service, Nintendo Switch Online (NSO), starting in Japan.

According to a recently released video on official YouTube, Nintendo of Japan will be introducing NSO software specifically designed for adult gamers. The new software will initially feature two remakes of Nintendo 64 games: the 1997 spy shooter “GoldenEye 007” and the 1999 space shooter “Jet Force Gemini.”

While “Jet Force Gemini” is expected to be available in overseas NSO stores in Japan on November 21, “GoldenEye 007” is set to join NSO in January 2023 as part of an annual expansion pack priced at US$50.

Despite both games being rated “T” overseas (suitable for 13-year-olds and older), the Japan Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (CERO) classifies “shooting games” as a restricted “Z” level, prohibiting their sale to players under 18 years of age.

As a result, Nintendo has taken measures to ensure compliance with the law by segregating “Goldeneye 007” and “Jet Force Gemini” into a separate NSO App designated for players 18 and older, allowing Japanese underage players to be shielded from accessing these games.
