▶ Han Dong-hoon: “Democratic Party is Reticent Only on North Korea Story… Bipartisan Cooperation Needed on Nuclear Threat”
▶ Na Kyung-won: “We must prepare for our own nuclear armament,” Yoon Sang-hyun: “The ruling and opposition parties should form a special committee to respond to North Korea’s nuclear program.”
South Korea’s People Power Party has criticized North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong-un’s disclosure of a uranium enrichment facility, labeling it as “a product of the Democratic Party government’s submissive diplomacy toward the North.”
Spokesperson Kim Hye-ran stated, “The whole world has been exposed to how absurd the Democratic Party administration’s persistent call for a policy of appeasement toward the North was.” She emphasized that South Korea can no longer be fooled by North Korea’s two-facedness of talking about peace while developing nuclear weapons behind its back.
Spokesperson Kim urged the Democratic Party to “wake up from its delusion of fake peace and face the painful nuclear threat from North Korea that it has brought upon itself.”
Representative Han Dong-hoon also expressed his concerns, stating that ”this is the reality created by past diplomacy of subservience toward North Korea and China.” He noted that the Democratic Party becomes more reserved when discussing North Korea, highlighting the need for bipartisan cooperation to address the nuclear threat.
Rep. Na Kyung-won argued that North Korea’s disclosure of its uranium enrichment facility demonstrates Kim Jong-un’s commitment to exponentially increasing his nuclear capabilities. She emphasized the need for South Korea to prepare for security negotiations with its own nuclear armament as the default, regardless of the outcome of the U.S. presidential election.
Rep. Na stressed that South Korea’s security measures should not stop at expanding nuclear potential, but also include developing its own nuclear weapons to proactively respond to changes in the international situation.
Rep. Yoon Sang-hyun expressed concerns about the opposition party’s focus on untimely preparations for martial law, accusations of pro-Japanese sentiment, and controversies over anti-Japanese propaganda. He argued that this will only give North Korea more time to strengthen its nuclear program.
Rep. Yoon urged the National Assembly to speak with one voice on security issues and work together across party lines. He proposed the formation of a ‘Special Committee on Responding to North Korea’ to address the nuclear threat.
