A powerful nor’easter delivering heavy rain and high winds across the Northeast U.S. resulted in hundreds of flight cancellations and delays on Sunday (CNBC). Major hubs in New England and the New York area experienced widespread travel disruptions as severe weather impacted regional flight schedules.
According to FlightAware, more than 300 flights in and out of Boston were canceled on Sunday, representing approximately a quarter of the day’s schedule. This followed another 260 cancellations in Boston on Saturday. In New York, high winds prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to slow operations, leading to delays for more than 660 flights—about 60% of the schedule—at LaGuardia Airport. Hundreds of additional delays were recorded across other major New England and New York-area airports.
Airline Waivers and Schedule Adjustments
Despite the severe weather conditions, airlines maintained most of their schedules ahead of the storm, resulting in far fewer cancellations than typically seen during major hurricanes or severe winter storms. Carriers generally cancel large portions of their schedules during severe events to prevent planes, crews, and passengers from becoming displaced.
In response to the weekend disruptions, American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and JetBlue Airways announced that affected customers can alter their travel plans. Passengers are permitted to change flights to a variety of airports in Boston, the New York City area, and smaller New England airports without incurring a change fee or fare difference, provided they fly before the middle of the week.
Prior Travel Disruptions
The weekend weather complications arrived on the heels of a separate travel disruption earlier in the week (CNBC). An equipment outage on Monday forced carriers to cancel hundreds of flights that were bound for Philadelphia and the New York area.
