A scorching heat wave gripped the tri-state area Tuesday, shattering temperature records and impacting millions. The extreme heat, which has blanketed much of the eastern U.S., broke records dating back to the 19th century in some locations, including Central Park.
All climate reporting sites in the region recorded broken high-temperature records for the day. The National Weather Service had issued heat warnings for over 150 million people, anticipating numerous locations would either tie or surpass existing daily high-temperature records.
Central Park reached a high of 99 degrees, slightly below the predicted 100 degrees.Though, it marked the hottest temperature recorded there as July 18, 2012, when the mercury hit 100. Tuesday’s high broke the June 24 record of 96 degrees,set in 1888. It has been approximately four years since temperatures reached 98 degrees.
