On her now-inactive Tumblr, Duwaji also hailed Palestinian plane hijacker Leila Khaled and members of the PFLP, while reposting content accusing U.S. Service members of “mercilessly slaughtering 3rd world civilians” to maintain “American hegemony.” A December 2015 repost blamed white people for the creation of al Qaeda, stating, “You can’t blame muslims for terrorism because they didn’t construct, fund nor train Al-Qaeda.” One of her posts included a pro-Palestine animation credited to her.

The apology follows the release of archived posts from her X (formerly Twitter) and Tumblr accounts by the Washington Free Beacon, which revealed content dating back to 2013. Among the material were posts in which Duwaji praised Shadia Abu Ghazaleh, a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), a U.S.-designated terrorist organization, and shared a photo of her with a caption extolling her as a resistance fighter. Other posts included declarations that Tel Aviv “shouldn’t exist in the first place,” referring to its residents as “occupiers,” and the use of a racial slur in a separate post from two years prior.

Rama Duwaji, wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, has issued a public apology for past social media posts containing racial slurs and content celebrating U.S.-designated terrorist groups, acknowledging the harm caused by her words as a teenager and young adult.

Duwaji, a 28-year-old Texas-born Syrian-American, expressed regret in an interview with Hyperallergic, stating that when old tweets she wrote at age 15 were recently published, she felt “a lot of shame being confronted with language I used that is so harmful to others. being 15 doesn’t excuse it.” She added that she has “read and seen a lot of what others have had to say in response, and I understand the hurt I caused and am truly sorry.”
