Updated June 08, 2025
Brian lehrer of WNYC and Errol Louis of NY1, two influential voices in New York City media, are set to moderate a debate among seven leading Democratic candidates for the 2025 mayoral primary. The debate, also moderated by Katie Honan of The City, will feature a diverse field including former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, assemblyman zohran Mamdani, City Comptroller Brad lander, and others.
The upcoming debate at John Jay College promises to be a crucial event as candidates vie for voter attention. The mayoral hopefuls include Adrienne Adams, Scott Stringer, Zellnor Myrie, and businessman Whitney Tilson, each bringing different experiences to the table. The debate will cover key issues such as housing, policing, and mass transit.
Lehrer and Louis, who first connected when Louis appeared on Lehrer’s show to discuss his work wiht the Central Brooklyn Federal Credit Union, bring a wealth of experience covering New York City politics. Louis, also a columnist for New York magazine, previously filled in for Lehrer on WNYC.Their contrasting styles—Louis’s directness and Lehrer’s calm demeanor—make them a compelling duo.
The first debate saw candidates targeting Cuomo’s record. mamdani criticized cuomo’s corporate ties, while Adams questioned his regrets. Michael Blake challenged Cuomo on defunding the police. With a crowded stage, Lehrer, Louis, and Honan face the challenge of facilitating a substantive discussion to inform voters before the June 24th primary.
“I’ve said on air,Errol Louis is the single best reason to still have cable,” Lehrer said.
Errol Louis noted the importance of experienced reporters in covering city policies. He observed that Mayor Eric Adams’ strategy of bypassing conventional media outlets has not been beneficial, citing a decline in approval ratings. Louis emphasized that reporters with a deep understanding of city policies can help explain them effectively.
“Trying to bypass the people whose job it is to know and understand fully and deeply the different policies that you’re trying to enact? We can help you explain it. That’s literally what we want to do,” Louis said.
