:## Long-Term Obesity May Trigger Early Aging Signals, Study Finds

A new⁣ study suggests a link between long-term⁣ obesity and accelerated biological aging, even in young adults.

Obesity is a⁤ growing public health concern, with rates‍ rising globally.According to the ⁤World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 5 million noncommunicable deaths were ‍caused by higher-than-optimal BMI in⁣ 2019. Between 1990 and 2022, ⁢obesity in children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 increased from 2% to 8%, while ⁣adult ‍obesity more than doubled from 7%‍ to 16%. obesity shortens lifespan and increases the risk of early-onset ‍chronic diseases, ⁤accelerating age-related conditions like sarcopenia, atherosclerosis, ⁤insulin resistance,⁢ and immune decline – ⁣conditions increasingly seen in younger populations.

Researchers have long⁢ suspected a connection between obesity⁤ and⁤ aging, noting shared biological traits like inflammation, microbiome imbalance, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cellular senescence. However, the exact molecular mechanisms remained⁢ unclear. A recent study published⁣ in ‍ JAMA⁣ Network⁢ Open sheds light ⁢on this relationship.

The Study: A Chilean Perspective

Investigators conducted a case-control study using data from a Chilean cohort of‍ 947 individuals, aged 28 to 31, ⁣whose health and nutrition data had⁢ been collected since 1992. Blood samples were collected between April‍ 2022 and June 2023. Participants were divided ⁣into three groups: those with a‍ healthy BMI throughout their lives (43%), those ⁢who had been obese since adolescence (21%), and those who had experienced obesity since childhood (36%).

The ⁢study revealed that long-term obesity was associated with higher levels‍ of biomarkers linked⁣ to aging,‍ including CRP, IL-6, FGF, and irisin. The average duration of obesity was 12.9 years for those who became ‍obese in ⁢adolescence and 26.6 ⁤years for those obese since childhood. Only a small number of participants (one with type 1 diabetes ⁤and three⁤ taking medication for glucose intolerance) had pre-existing metabolic conditions.

What This Means

These findings suggest that long-term obesity, even ⁤starting in early life, can⁢ trigger molecular signals‍ associated with aging,⁣ even in young adults. This research underscores the urgency of addressing obesity to promote healthy aging and ⁣prevent the early onset of chronic diseases.

Looking Ahead

Further⁤ research ⁢is needed to fully understand the complex ⁢interplay⁤ between obesity and aging. Though, this study provides compelling evidence that maintaining a healthy weight⁤ is crucial not only for immediate health but also for long-term well-being.

Key Takeaways:

Rising Rates: ⁤Obesity rates⁤ are increasing globally in‍ both children⁣ and adults.
Accelerated Aging: Long-term obesity is linked to biomarkers⁢ associated with accelerated biological‍ aging.
early ⁣Onset Disease: Obesity ⁣increases the risk of early-onset chronic‍ diseases.
Prevention is Key: Maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for long-term health and well-being.
