Shohei Ohtani Leads the Charge as Dodgers Face D-backs
Ohtani Plays as Leadoff Hitter and Designated Hitter in Away Game
Dodgers vs. D-backs (Arizona, 2nd Japan time)
Dodgers pitcher Shohei Ohtani is set to play as the designated hitter in the away game against the Diamondbacks. With 44 home runs under his belt, expectations are high for a 45th home run in three consecutive games.
In the game on August 31 (September 1, Japan time), Ohtani played as the leadoff hitter and designated hitter, finishing with one hit and two RBIs in five at-bats. His 44th leadoff home run in the first inning marked his second consecutive game with a home run. The powerful home run off veteran right-hander Kelly was a highlight of the game. Additionally, second-place infielder Mookie Betts and third-place infielder Freddie Freeman also hit home runs, making it the first time that the MVP trio has hit three consecutive home runs. This achievement marked the first time in the team’s history that three consecutive home runs had been hit right after the start of a game. The team won 8-6.
Despite a batting average of .235 in August, Ohtani’s 12 home runs and 15 stolen bases were the most in both leagues. He achieved 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases (40-40) in the fastest time in history, and also achieved 43-43 for the first time in history. This is his first winning season in his seventh year in the majors. Attention is focused on how far he can improve his numbers in this “tough September.”
Brandon Furth will start for the Diamondbacks. He has two hits and one RBI in three at-bats against Ohtani.
