Online round table with 2 former Heads of ASEAN SOM Vietnam

This morning, April 19, at the World & Vietnam Newspaper Studio, an online round table took place: ‘ASEAN in me, our home’ with two speakers, Ambassador Pham Quang Vinh and Ambassador Nguyen Trung Thanh. , right before the 2024 ASEAN Future Forum.

On July 28, 1995, Vietnam became the 7th member of ASEAN, marking the country’s first step in the journey of regional and world integration. Compared to 57 years of formation and development of ASEAN, 29 years of Vietnam’s participation is not a long time, but is associated with meaningful developments of the Association as well as the country.

It can be affirmed that ASEAN’s growth is closely linked to Vietnam and Vietnam’s development has the image of ASEAN. Vietnamese people consider ASEAN a common home with the people of the Association’s member countries. In particular, ASEAN has become an unforgettable part in the lives of many Vietnamese diplomats whose names are associated with that journey.

Newspaper World & Vietnam conduct an online Round Table with the topic “ASEAN in me, our home” on the occasion of Vietnam hosting the ASEAN Future Forum 2024 for the first time on April 23 – an initiative of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh launched at the ASEAN Summit in September 2023 in Jakarta, Indonesia; towards the 29th anniversary of Vietnam officially becoming an ASEAN member (July 28, 1995 – July 28, 2024) with 2 special guests, namely: Ambassador Pham Quang Vinh, former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Former Head of SOM ASEAN Vietnam (2007-2014) and Ambassador Nguyen Trung Thanh, former Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, former Head of SOM ASEAN Vietnam (2004-2007).

Ambassador Pham Quang Vinhentered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1980 and worked for many years at the Department of International Organizations. He held the position of Deputy Director, then Director, Head of ASEAN SOM of Vietnam from January 2007-9/2008 and then Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs, Head of ASEAN SOM of Vietnam from September 2008-9 /2011.

From September 2011 to July 2014, Mr. Pham Quang Vinh held the position of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of Vietnam’s relations with countries in South Asia, Southeast Asia and the South Pacific, and was also Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Vietnam’s ASEAN SOM. He served as Vietnamese Ambassador to the US for a term from July 2014 to June 2018.

He was awarded the second level Ambassador rank – the highest diplomatic rank of the State of Vietnam.

Ambassador Nguyen Trung Thanh joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1981. He was appointed Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Head of SOM ASEAN Vietnam from 2002-2007; is the senior representative of Vietnam drafting the ASEAN Charter.

Mr. Nguyen Trung Thanh served as Ambassador of Vietnam in Singapore (2007-2011), Head of the Permanent Representative Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva (2012-2016), Ambassador of Vietnam in Cuba and 6 other Caribbean countries (2017-2020).
