Updated June 04, 2025
OpenAI announced Wednesday that its ChatGPT artificial intelligence platform now boasts 3 million paying business users, marking a critically important increase from the 2 million reported in February. The San Francisco-based company, which gained widespread attention in late 2022 with its ChatGPT chatbot, has been actively developing workplace-specific versions of its AI tools.
The 3 million users encompass customers of ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Team, and ChatGPT Edu. Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s chief operating officer, noted the close relationship between ChatGPT’s consumer growth and its adoption by businesses. As of late March, the company supported 500 million weekly active users.
OpenAI anticipates revenue of $12.7 billion this year. Lightcap indicated that businesses across various sectors, including heavily regulated industries like financial services and health care, are increasingly adopting OpenAI’s business tools.Companies such as Lowe’s, Morgan Stanley, and Uber are among the users.
The company also unveiled new features for its business offerings. ChatGPT Team and ChatGPT Enterprise users can now utilize “connectors” to access data from third-party platforms like Google Drive, Dropbox, SharePoint, Box, and onedrive directly within ChatGPT. Additional research connectors are currently in beta testing.
OpenAI has introduced “record mode” in ChatGPT, enabling users to record and transcribe meetings. Initially available with audio only, this feature facilitates follow-up tasks and integrates with internal documents and files. Users can also convert recordings into documents using OpenAI’s Canvas tool.
Record mode is initially rolling out to ChatGPT Teams users on macOS, with plans to extend it to ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Pro, ChatGPT Enterprise, and ChatGPT Edu subscribers soon. Lightcap emphasized that these updates, driven by enterprise customer feedback, aim to enhance the utility of OpenAI’s workplace solutions.
“It’s got to be able to do tasks for you, and to do that, it’s got to really have knowledge of everything going on around you and your work,” Lightcap said. “It can’t be the intern locked in a closet. It’s got to be able to see what you see.”
OpenAI reports signing up an average of nine new enterprise clients each week. Lightcap expressed the company’s commitment to maintaining this growth rate, stating that businesses are increasingly recognizing AI as an essential component of the modern knowledge economy.
