The Indiana Pacers are heading to the NBA Finals for the first time in 25 years. On saturday night, Indiana secured a 125-108 victory over the New York Knicks in Game 6, winning the series 4-2 and clinching the eastern Conference title. This marks a significant milestone for the team, who began the season as underdogs but demonstrated resilience and teamwork throughout the playoffs.
“I can’t put into words how special this group is,” Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton said, emphasizing the team’s bond and the importance of this achievement.
The Pacers’ journey to the NBA Finals included a strong finish to the regular season, followed by playoff victories over the milwaukee Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers. Their ability to overcome deficits and perform under pressure has defined their postseason run. Now, the indiana Pacers face the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals, with Game 1 scheduled for Thursday night in Oklahoma City.
Pascal Siakam earned the Larry Bird trophy as Eastern Conference finals MVP,contributing 31 points in the deciding game. Haliburton added 21 points, 13 assists, and 6 rebounds. The two shared a heartfelt embrace after the final buzzer, celebrating their accomplishment.
“It is rewarding to be in this position,” Siakam said. “To be able to get to this level and having an opportunity to play for an NBA championship. That’s amazing.”
Haliburton added, “We just talked about, man, this is what we got together to do. To do something special and we’re part of it right now.”
Coach Rick Carlisle, who previously led Dallas to an NBA title in 2011, acknowledged the team’s special run. “This group has been special, pulled off some very special things,” Carlisle said. “So, we don’t take it for granted at all.”
The Pacers last reached the NBA Finals in 2000, also after defeating the Knicks in the conference finals. However, they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the championship series that year. Carlisle cautioned against premature celebrations, emphasizing the challenge ahead.
“I think you enjoy tonight and then after that we got to move forward,” said Siakam, who won a championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019. ”We got a team out ther that’s waiting for us that’s serious. They’re the best team in the NBA. That that’s the challenge. I was telling the guys, for me, I got [to the Finals] when I was in Year 3 and I thought I would get back there a lot.It didn’t happen. So it’s a hell of an opportunity and you don’t know when you’re going to get it again.”
Despite their Eastern Conference championship, the Indiana Pacers enter the NBA Finals as underdogs. ESPN BET has established the Oklahoma City thunder as heavy favorites.Pacers center Myles Turner believes their success represents a shift in the league. “I think it’s a new blueprint for the league, man,” Turner said. “The years of the superteams and stacking [stars] is not as effective as it once was… the new trend now is just kind of what we’re doing.OKC does the same thing. Young guys, get out and run, defend and use the power of friendship.”
What’s next
