Understanding the conflict in Papua
The incident involving the shooting of the Central Papua Regional Police Chief is part of a larger, complex conflict in the Papua region of Indonesia. This conflict has roots in the ancient context of West Papua’s annexation by Indonesia in 1969, and the subsequent aspirations for independence among some segments of the Papuan population. The KKB, often associated with the Free Papua Movement (OPM), are responsible for numerous attacks on security forces and civilians.
What is the KKB?
The KKB (Kelompok Kriminal Bersenjata), which translates to “Armed Criminal Group,” is a term used by the Indonesian government to refer to various armed groups operating in Papua. while often linked to the OPM, the KKB encompasses a range of actors with varying motivations, including local grievances related to land rights, resource exploitation, and political marginalization. It’s important to note that the Indonesian government’s characterization of these groups as simply ”criminal” is contested by some, who argue that they are political actors engaged in an armed struggle.
