In the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Championship (Suzuki Cup), which is called the ‘World Cup of Southeast Asia,’ Vietnamese coach Park Hang-seo and Indonesia coach Shin Tae-yong are aiming for the championship cup.

The Vietnam national football team, led by coach Park, started off freshly by beating Laos 2-0 in the first leg of the Suzuki Cup Group B held at Bishan Stadium in Singapore on the 6th. Vietnam won the 2018 tournament for the first time in 10 years and their second career since 2008 under Park’s leadership. The Suzuki Cup, which was scheduled to be held last year, was postponed due to the impact of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), but started on the 5th.

In the 2022 Qatar World Cup Asian Final Qualifier, Vietnam is at the bottom of Group B with 6 losses. However, he unilaterally pushed Laos by demonstrating his superior skills from the experience he had accumulated in the final qualifying round. “I am satisfied with the result,” Park said. “Some players were injured in the World Cup final qualifiers and could not compete in this match,” he said.

The biggest obstacle to Vietnam’s second consecutive championship is Indonesia, led by coach Shin. Vietnam and Indonesia are in the same Group B. The Suzuki Cup consists of 10 teams divided into two groups. Groups 1 and 2 advance to the quarterfinals. Vietnam and Indonesia will face off on the 15th. Before the match, Indonesia will play the group stage on the 9th (Cambodia) and the 12th (Laos). Vietnam will face Malaysia on the 12th. Reporter Dongwook Kim creating@donga.com
