Rising Tensions in Pati Regency
Pati Regency, Central Java, is facing a political crisis following a dramatic 250% increase in property taxes. The controversial hike, implemented in May 2025 by Regent Sudewo, marks the first adjustment in 14 years and has ignited widespread public outrage, culminating in large-scale protests and calls for his resignation.
The Pati Regency DPRD (regional people’s Representative Council) has responded by forming a Special Committee (Pansus) to investigate the tax increase. A scheduled meeting of the committee was postponed on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, due to a plenary session, but is now rescheduled for Thursday, August 21, 2025. The committee intends to summon officials from the Regional Financial and Asset Management Agency (BPKAD) to determine the origins of the substantial tax increase. According to Teguh Bandang Waluyo, Chairperson of the DPRD Questionnaire Rights Committee, the initial regulation for the tax hike was proposed by the former Acting Regent, Henggar Budi Anggoro.
Protests and Calls for Resignation
thousands of residents took to the streets on August 13,2025,demanding regent Sudewo’s resignation. The protests resulted in 64 injuries, highlighting the intensity of public anger.Despite subsequently retracting the tax hike and issuing a public apology, the damage to his reputation appears significant. Demonstrations have continued, with a community alliance, “Pati United,” establishing a protest post outside the DPRD office on August 18, 2025, to monitor the Special Committee’s proceedings and voice complaints regarding the policy and alleged violence during the August 13th protest.
Political Fallout and Potential Impeachment
Despite mounting pressure, Regent Sudewo has resisted calls for his resignation, asserting that he was “chosen by the people constitutionally and democratically.” Though, he acknowledged the situation as a “learning experience” and pledged to cooperate with the DPRD’s inquiry. The possibility of impeachment is now being seriously considered, with discussions involving members of the Special Committee and political analysts like Agung Baskoro of Trias Politika.
