Patient Sentenced to Prison for Threatening Nurse with Weapon During Hospital Stay

A hospital patient in his 60s, who brandished a weapon while attempting to administer himself a dose of painkillers and threatened a nurse in the process, has been handed a prison sentence. The verdict was delivered by Judge Jeong Ji-won of the Chuncheon Wonju District Court Branch Criminal 3rd Criminal, who sentenced the 68-year-old offender to four months behind bars for the charge of special threats.

The incident occurred in October last year, when Patient A, during his stay at a hospital in Wonju, seized a weapon from underneath his pillow and threatened Nurse B, aged 25, by attempting to stab her in the stomach. Fortunately, his attempts failed. The court learned that Patient A became aggressive towards Nurse B after expressing dissatisfaction with his condition, stating, “I feel sick,” before unexpectedly revealing the weapon. He proceeded to issue the threat to Nurse B, who was about to administer his painkiller injection, instructing her to lie down.

Throughout the trial, Patient A vehemently denied having made any threats with a weapon. However, the court deemed him guilty based on the testimony found in the 112 report and the evidence provided by witnesses present during the incident.

Judge Jeong emphasized the importance of imposing harsh penalties for acts of violence targeting healthcare professionals within hospitals. This serves as a deterrent to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.
