Patrick Schwarzenegger has been cast as the lead male character in the upcoming film adaptation of Emily Henry’s 2020 bestselling novel, Beach Read. The actor confirmed the news on April 14, 2026, via an Instagram post where he announced he would be playing the role of Augustus Gus Everett.

Schwarzenegger will star opposite Phoebe Dynevor, who has been cast as the female lead, January Andrews. In his announcement, Schwarzenegger mentioned that he and Dynevor had previously worked together during chemistry reads for the production.

The project is being directed by Yulin Kuang. Schwarzenegger credited Kuang for her direction and the conversations they shared regarding the characters and their specific stories during the casting process.

Plot and Character Details

The story of Beach Read centers on January Andrews, a romance novelist struggling with writer’s block following the death of her father. While spending a summer at her family’s beach house, she encounters Augustus Everett, an acclaimed author of literary fiction and a former college rival.

Plot and Character Details

Stuck on their respective projects, the two authors enter a bet to swap genres for the summer. The narrative follows their progression from rivals to romantic partners as they challenge each other’s writing styles.

Audience and Industry Reaction

The casting announcement has elicited a divided response from the novel’s devoted readership. While some fans expressed excitement and support, others on social media indicated that Schwarzenegger did not fit their internal vision of the character Gus Everett, with some users employing the hashtag #NotMyGusEverett.

Reaction within the BookTok community on TikTok was largely negative, including videos of users expressing disappointment. However, some viewers remained diplomatic, stating they would avoid being overly critical of the casting.

Schwarzenegger received public support from several high-profile peers. Taylor Lautner expressed his approval of the casting, and Johnny Lowe, the son of Rob Lowe, commented on the actor’s physical preparation for the role.

Emily Henry’s Expanding Cinematic Portfolio

The adaptation of Beach Read is part of a larger effort to bring Emily Henry’s bibliography to the screen. In July 2024, it was announced that her novel Funny Story would also be developed into a film through Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company.

Other adaptations currently in the works include Book Lovers and Happy Place. This follows the January 2026 premiere of the People We Meet on Vacation adaptation on Netflix.

In a January interview with Us Weekly, Henry noted that the momentum from the People We Meet on Vacation project had helped accelerate the progress of her other adaptations. She expressed hope for providing more concrete updates as these projects continue to move forward.

Schwarzenegger expressed his commitment to the adaptation in his social media post, stating that he intends to do everything possible to make the fans proud and bring Henry’s writing to life. He also noted that his wife, Abby Champion, is a dedicated fan of the author’s work.
