Jakarta – A number of politicians from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) gathered at the residence of the party’s chairperson, Megawati Soekarnoputri, in Teuku Umar, Central Jakarta, this afternoon. Among the attendees were the Chairperson of the DPP for Honorary PDIP Komarudin Watubun and the Wasekjen in the field of Communication PDIP Adian Napitupulu.

According to AFP monitoring, at Megawati’s residence in Teuku Age, Menteng, Central Jakarta, Saturday (February 22, 2025), at 12:20 p.m. local time, four PDIP politicians were seen arriving. Adian Napitupulu was the first to arrive at around 10:00 a.m. Shortly after, the Chairperson of the DPP for the National Legal System Reform Ronny Talpekessy arrived at around 10:55 a.m. Former PPA Minister Bintang Puspayoga and Komarudin Watubun also followed.

All four politicians were seen wearing black attire. When asked about the agenda of today’s meeting, none of them commented and they immediately entered Megawati’s house.

It is known that on Friday (February 21) night, a number of PDIP politicians were seen in and out of Megawati’s residence. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung also moved closer to Megawati’s residence yesterday.

Previously, Megawati Soekarnoputri ordered all regional heads from PDI Perjuangan to postpone the retreat activities held by the government in Akmil, Magelang, Central Java. This was stated in Megawati’s instructions in letter number 7294/in/DPP/II/2025 issued Thursday (February 20). PDIP spokesman, Guntur Romli, shared the letter in the form of electronic documents via the WhatsApp (WA) application.

This instruction arose after the detention of PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto. Hasto was known to be detained after undergoing a second examination as a suspect on Thursday (February 20) at 6:08 p.m. local time. The KPK has named Hasto as a suspect in December 2024. Now, Hasto will undergo detention in the KPK Detention Center for the first 20 days.

In a video shared by Said Abdullah, Megawati Soekarnoputri was seen arriving at her house, hinting at a potential report to the general chairman.

Context and Implications

The political landscape in Indonesia has been fraught with tension, similar to the political climate in the United States during the 2020 presidential election. The detention of Hasto Kristiyanto and the subsequent gathering of PDIP politicians at Megawati’s residence highlight the ongoing power struggles within the party. This situation is reminiscent of the political infighting seen in the Democratic Party during the 2016 presidential primaries, where internal disputes and leadership challenges were prevalent.

In the United States, such political turmoil often leads to significant shifts in policy and leadership. For instance, the impeachment trials of President Donald Trump in 2019 and 2021 highlighted deep divisions within the Republican Party, leading to changes in party leadership and policy directions. In Indonesia, the current situation could similarly lead to changes in the PDIP’s leadership and policy directions, affecting the country’s political stability.
