Pemex will close six-year period with a 67.4% increase in fertilizer production

Mexican Petroleum (Pemex) plans to close the six-year term with the capacity to produce up to 1.3 million tons of fertilizers, what will represent a 67.4 percent increase compared to the levels reached in 2018.

To this end, the company has among its main plans that, from December 2023 to the end of 2024, three of the ammonia plantscomplexes that currently remain inactive.

It is worth mentioning that this product is one of the main raw materials for the production of nitrogen fertilizers such as urea, this being one of the objectives the company has worked on during this administration.

Pemex has four complexes. However, from September 2018 to the end of 2019, these remained completely stopped, so the production of said product remained at zero, until 2020 when one of these plants was able to start up and produce 373 tons per day of ammonia. .

It is expected that for At the end of this year, an average of 776 thousand tons per day will be reachedwhich will mean an increase of 108% compared to 2020 levels, since the start of the second plant is expected in December of this year.

However, for 2024 the objective is to achieve an average production of three thousand 277 tons per day of ammoniaa volume that will mean a growth of 322% compared to 2023 and 778% if compared to 2020 levels, this is because the two remaining plants will begin operating for a total of four.

As part of these plans, Pemex has been making investments for more than 15 thousand 100 million pesos in the repair of two urea plants, four ammonia plants, the rehabilitation of the Lázaro Cárdenas plant and the phosphate rock mine in Baja California Sur.

The objective is to increase the fertilizer productionwhich at the start of this administration was 781 thousand tons, however, it is expected that in 2024 a volume of one million 307 thousand tons will be reached, which will represent an increase of 67.4%, while by 2027 it is expected to achieve a peak of one million 714 thousand tons, which will be almost 120% more than in 2018.

The goal of these works and investments is to be able to supply fertilizersfree of charge, to small rural producers throughout the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader).

We have supplied 93% of the 2023 free fertilizer delivery program with 921 thousand tons of fertilizers in 30 states of the country, in a period of nine months. Pemex has inventories of 307.5 thousand tons of fertilizers and will continue producing,” the company mentions.

Ammonia is a petrochemical obtained from natural gas, it is used as a fertilizer, while it is raw material for the production of other nitrogen fertilizers such as urea. Ammonia is a product with a wide demand in Mexico, either for use as a direct application fertilizer or as a raw material in the manufacture of nitrogenous and phosphate fertilizers.
