“At‍ present, the Panama ‌Canal is facing a continuous ⁤threat,” Hegseth said, speaking at a⁤ police station near the canal’s shipping route, according to AFP.

The U.S. ⁣originally constructed the Panama Canal over a century‍ ago, later handing it over to⁣ Panama in ‌1999.

China Responds Angrily to Hegseth’s Accusations

The Chinese Embassy in Panama also refuted Hegseth’s claims of Chinese interference in the canal’s ⁣operations.

“China has never taken part in the management or ⁢operation of the Panama‌ Canal,” ⁣the embassy stated.

Beijing has⁣ called ⁢on Washington ⁢to cease its “extortion” and “looting” of Panama and other⁢ countries ⁢in the region. The Chinese Embassy accused the U.S. of attempting to undermine cooperation‌ between China and⁤ Panama.

“China always respects Panama’s sovereignty in connection with the canal,” the embassy asserted in its statement.
