Jeonju Prosecutor’s Office./News 1

The prosecution, which is investigating the perjury case in the trial of Jeonbuk Superintendent Seo Geo-seok, has requested an arrest warrant for Superintendent Seo’s brother-in-law on charges of soliciting false testimony.

On the 14th, the Criminal Division 3 of the Jeonju Prosecutor’s Office (Chief Seung-hak Lee) announced that it had requested an arrest warrant for Superintendent Seo’s brother-in-law, Mr. Yoo, on charges of perjury.

Mr. Yoo is accused of asking Chonbuk National University professor Lee Gwi-jae, who testified as a perjurer in the trial of Jeonbuk Superintendent Seo Geo-seok, indicted on charges of publishing false information in the local elections of 2022, to provide false testimony that “there was no assault.”

Professor Lee Gwi-jae testified at the trial that “I was not assaulted by Superintendent Seo Geo-seok”, but later confessed to perjury during the prosecution’s investigation, saying: “There was an assault “. The prosecution indicted Professor Lee on charges of perjury. Previously, on the 12th, the prosecution conducted a search and seizure of Superintendent Seo’s home, vehicle, and Jeonbuk Provincial Education Office. The crime contested in the warrant is that of inciting false testimony.

Prosecutors believe Professor Lee was slapped several times by Superintendent Seo at a restaurant in central Jeonju on November 18, 2013. Immediately after the incident, Professor Lee even stated in a police investigation: “I was attacked by Superintendent Seo”.

However, Professor Lee changed his words in 2022. When suspicions of assault arose against Superintendent Seo, who was participating in local elections at the time, Professor Lee personally wrote a letter confirming the facts, saying: “The issues (assault charges) reported in connection with the recent elections for Jeonbuk Superintendent of Education are unfounded.” Superintendent Seo also stated during the debate between the candidates for the Jeonbuk Superintendent of Education that he had “never committed violence against a fellow professor (Lee Gwi-jae)”.

As a result, Professor Cheon Ho-seong of Jeonju National University of Education, who was a competing candidate at the time, reported to the prosecution that Superintendent Seo had spread false information. The prosecution put Superintendent Seo on trial, claiming that “there was violence”, based on Professor Lee’s hospital medical records.

Professor Lee stood by his statement in court that he was “not assaulted” and on August 25 last year, the First District Court found Superintendent Seo not guilty, saying: “Professor Lee’s statement, a key witness in this case, it has been overturned several times and cannot be trusted.” condemned.

Subsequently, the prosecution established that Professor Lee had sworn falsely in court and continued the investigation. Prosecutors conducted four searches and seizures in connection with this case, including a search and seizure of Professor Lee’s home and laboratory on October 10 last year, and investigated around 20 people involved. About 3,100 recorded files were also analyzed and Professor Lee was arrested on the 19th of last month.

Professor Lee denied the allegations at the beginning of the investigation, but eventually made false confessions when the prosecution presented objective evidence during the investigation after his arrest. Professor Lee is said to have admitted the charges, saying: “I perjured myself to receive Chancellor Seo’s support in the 2022 Chonbuk National University presidential election.” Professor Lee ran in the 2022 Chonbuk National University presidential election, but was defeated.
