Peter Haas wants to sit with the big teams again

US Ambassador Peter Haas has sought time to meet senior leaders of Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party.

A US embassy spokesman said in a memo on Monday (November 13) that he had requested time to meet with senior leaders of the three major political parties.

The US wants free, fair and peaceful elections and calls on all parties to refrain from violence and exercise restraint, the statement said.

The United States does not favor one political party over another and calls on all parties for unconditional dialogue.

The US Embassy also reiterated that the visa policy will be used against those who obstruct the democratic process.

When asked about this from Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, he said, “We always say that we have to do some things even if we don’t like them.”

He said, ‘The matter of election is internal to the people of Bangladesh. The people of Bangladesh elected the representatives, all of them made a constitution in 1972 under the leadership of Bangabandhu. That constitution has been torn apart several times by various military governments. After the re-establishment of democratic government, we tried to restore it roughly. Elections will be held according to that constitution and according to the laws that have been made in the light of the constitution.’
