Philippines Kill 7 Communist Rebels
Philippine Military Claims Near Collapse of Decades-Long Communist Insurgency
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine military announced a significant victory this past weekend, reporting the deaths of nine New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas in a clash in Masbate province. This operation, according to military officials, marks a critical turning point in the nation’s protracted battle against the communist insurgency, which has spanned over five decades.
The engagement occurred early Sunday in the remote hinterlands of Uson town, following an initial encounter last week were two rebels were killed. Army forces from the 9th Infantry Division successfully tracked down the fleeing insurgents, leading to a 30-minute firefight.
“We’re in the final push,” stated Major Frank Roldan, spokesperson for the 9th Infantry Division. He described the island province of Masbate, a poverty-stricken agricultural region, as having only a few dozen armed guerrillas remaining. “This successful operation delivers a major blow to the already weakening insurgency,” Roldan added, urging the remaining rebels to surrender and embrace the government’s peace initiatives.
During the operation, troops recovered seven assault rifles and two grenade launchers. At least eight other rebels managed to escape and are currently being pursued by the military.
The Philippine military leadership has been vocal about the declining strength of the NPA.General Romeo Brawner Jr.,Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, recently stated that the rebel force has dwindled to fewer than 900 fighters, primarily concentrated in eastern rural areas. This is a stark contrast to the estimated 25,000 insurgents at the insurgency’s peak, making it one of Asia’s longest-running rebellions.
Brigadier General Medel Aguilar, deputy commander of the military’s Civil Relations Service, echoed the sentiment, noting that the guerrilla forces are “on the brink of collapse” due to a combination of battlefield defeats, surrenders, and internal factionalism.
Peace talks aimed at resolving the conflict, which were previously brokered by Norway, collapsed under former President Rodrigo Duterte. Both sides had accused each other of continuing hostilities despite the ongoing negotiations. The current military operations aim to solidify gains and bring a definitive end to the long-standing insurgency.
