The upcoming release of Pokémon Champions, a battle simulator for Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, will introduce Abilities for the Mega Evolutions first seen in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. While Pokémon Legends: Z-A introduced nearly 50 new Mega Evolutions across its base game and the Mega Dimension DLC, those transformations lacked the Abilities or passive perks typically used to create strategic depth in battle.
Pokémon Champions is designed to serve as the new competitive platform for the franchise. Because it focuses on the competitive scene, the developers are adding Abilities to these superpowered forms to enable the strategic possibilities that were absent in the RPG format of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Confirmed Mega Evolution Abilities
Several specific Abilities have been revealed for the new Mega Evolutions. Mega Dragonite will utilize Multiscale
, a hidden ability from its base form that reduces the amount of damage the Pokémon receives while it is at full HP, increasing its survivability during its initial entry into battle.
Mega Meganium will feature a brand new ability called Mega Sol
. This ability allows the Pokémon to utilize the perks of the harsh sunlight weather mechanic. Specifically, Mega Meganium can use moves such as Solar Beam without the standard one-turn charge requirement. The ability protects the Pokémon from the typical drawbacks of sunlight, such as the increased damage received from fire-type attacks.
Mega Feraligatr is receiving a new ability called Dragonize
. This ability converts all normal-type attacks into dragon-type moves and applies a 20-percent power boost to those attacks. This is particularly impactful because Mega Feraligatr becomes a water/dragon-type Pokémon upon evolution, meaning it already benefits from an attack boost when using dragon-type moves.
Mega Froslass will be able to summon a snowstorm immediately upon Mega Evolution through the Snow Warning
ability. While Snow Warning is an existing ability in the franchise, it is a new addition to the Froslass evolution line.
Kalos Starter and Additional Mega Forms
In addition to the newly detailed abilities, information has emerged regarding the Mega Evolutions of the Kalos region starters. These forms will integrate existing competitive abilities to define their roles in the Pokémon Champions simulator.
- Mega Greninja will utilize
Protean
. - Mega Chesnaught will utilize
Bulletproof
. - Mega Delphox will utilize
Levitate
.
The inclusion of these abilities marks a significant shift in how the Mega Evolutions from Pokémon Legends: Z-A are utilized, moving them from a purely RPG context into a structured competitive environment.
Platform and Release Details
Pokémon Champions is being developed as a cross-platform experience for both the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. It is intended to be the primary venue for competitive play moving forward, bridging the gap between the narrative-driven experience of the Legends series and the tactical requirements of high-level battling.
According to reports published on April 1, 2026, Pokémon Champions is scheduled for release next week, placing its expected launch around April 8, 2026.
