Positive Growth in Convenience Stores Across China Points to Promising Future: China Chain Store and Franchise Association Report

China’s Convenience Store Industry Experiences Positive Growth in Various Cities

The China Chain Store and Franchise Association reports an encouraging surge in the number of convenience stores across the country, indicating a robust development in this sector.

Recently released by the China Chain Store and Franchise Association, the “China Urban Convenience Store Development Index” reveals that many cities in China are experiencing positive growth in convenience store establishments. This growth can be attributed to policies aimed at accelerating the construction of convenient living areas within cities, such as the quarter-minute concept.

The survey highlights Xiamen, Taiyuan, Dongguan, Changsha, and Guangzhou among the top five cities with significant convenience store development. These cities, along with others, constitute 64.1% of the total cities surveyed, demonstrating a stable growth trend in their respective convenience store sectors. Moreover, the development of convenience stores has now expanded beyond major cities into fourth and fifth-tier cities as well as county-level markets.

While convenience stores largely focus on regional markets due to factors such as geographical distance, supply chain limitations, and management efficiency, some chain convenience store brands are slowly expanding their reach. Continuous improvements in supply chain capabilities and digital technologies have intensified competition in certain cities, leading to regional integration among chain brands.

A spokesperson for the China Chain Store and Franchise Association emphasized that the differentiation in 24-hour convenience store proportions between cities remains consistent compared to the previous year. Notably, there is a clear disparity, with higher proportions in the south and lower in the north. This distinction can be attributed to various factors, including climate conditions, economic levels, and local residents’ eating habits.

Furthermore, the convenience store market in China still has room for improvement when compared to mature markets worldwide. Only a few cities in China have achieved market saturation with less than 2,500 people per store, meeting global standards. In most cities, however, convenience store saturation ranges from 3,000 to 9,000 people per store, indicating ample potential for growth. To ensure the healthy and sustainable development of convenience stores, policy guidance and support are crucial.

As convenience stores continue to play a vital role in ensuring the supply and meeting the consumption needs of urban residents, the China Chain Store and Franchise Association believes that 24-hour convenience stores can further enhance their services. Through policy support and guidance, these stores can better address the daily urgency of consumers, surpassing their current responsibilities and meeting evolving needs more effectively.

With its positive trajectory and potential, China’s convenience store industry stands poised for further growth, offering promising opportunities for both entrepreneurs and consumers.
