Regional Energy Initiative: Greece, Romania, and Bulgaria Unite to Tackle High Energy Prices
Greece, Romania, and Bulgaria have joined forces to launch an initiative aimed at stimulating Europe to lower energy prices, as announced by Theodoros Skilakakis, the Greek Minister of Environment and Energy.
The Greek government is closely monitoring market developments, while the energy ministers of Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania are working together to establish a permanent intervention mechanism to address extreme price fluctuations. This move is in response to the region’s disconnection from the broader European energy market.
According to Skilakakis, the lack of interconnections between the Central European market and South-Eastern Europe leads to extreme price spikes on certain days, which is unacceptable and problematic. He emphasized that this situation creates an “energy island” in the region, where producers reap financial benefits without investing in necessary connectivity.
Skilakakis argued that it is unjust to reward producers with higher earnings when they fail to invest in network connectivity. Instead, the government is seeking a permanent solution to address these endemic issues. The minister assured that the government will continue to intervene whenever necessary, as it has done in the past.
Key Points:
- Greece, Romania, and Bulgaria launch a joint initiative to lower energy prices in Europe.
- The region’s disconnection from the European energy market leads to extreme price fluctuations.
- The lack of interconnections between Central Europe and South-Eastern Europe creates an “energy island” in the region.
- The government seeks a permanent solution to address these issues and ensure fair pricing for consumers.
