President Moon Jae-in will tour three European countries from the 28th to the 5th of next month for 9 days and 7 nights. He will visit Rome, Italy, where the G20 summit will be held, meet Pope Francis, and visit Britain and Hungary.

At a briefing on the 22nd, Blue House spokesperson Park Kyung-mi said, “President Moon will visit Rome, Italy, Glasgow, England, and Budapest, Hungary for an official visit to the Vatican, to attend the G20, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) summit, and to make a state visit to Hungary.” said.

President Moon will visit the Vatican on the 29th to meet with Pope Francis and the Vatican Secretary of State Parolin, respectively. President Moon’s visit to the Vatican will be the second time since October 2018 to discuss ways to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula, overcome the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), and respond to climate change. During his last visit, Pope Francis expressed his intention to visit North Korea by saying, “I can go if an official invitation from North Korea arrives.” Even during this meeting, the observation that President Moon will ask the Pope to visit North Korea again bears weight.

After attending the G20 Summit held in Rome, Italy on the 30th and 31st, President Moon will attend the 26th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) Summit held in Glasgow, UK on November 1st and 2nd. President Moon will deliver a keynote speech at COP26, attended by the heads of 130 countries. At the G20 summit or the COP26 summit, there is a possibility that the ROK-US summit will be held again with US President Joe Biden, whom he met in May.

After visiting Hungary, President Moon visits the memorial space for the victims of the ship accident in Hungary on November 2 to commemorate the victims and express his gratitude for the establishment of the memorial space. In addition, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland will hold bilateral talks with the Visegrad Group countries, respectively. The Visegrad Group is Korea’s second largest trading partner and largest export market within the European Union (EU). Through this visit, it is expected that cooperation in future promising industries such as electric vehicles and batteries will be strengthened.
