The opposition party protested, “It is absurd to see the Ministry of Justice instead giving a ‘Parents’ Day gift’ to the president’s mother-in-law.”

The Ministry of Justice held a parole review board meeting yesterday and unanimously ruled that President Yoon Seok-yeol’s mother-in-law Choi Eun-soon is eligible.

The Ministry of Justice said: “A unanimous decision on eligibility was made based on a comprehensive consideration of age, sentence, prison record, health status and risk of reoffending.”

As a result, Mr. Choi will be released at 10:00 am on the 14th after receiving final permission from Justice Minister Park Seong-jae.

Mr. Choi, sentenced to a year in prison on charges of bank statement falsification, was scheduled to be released on July 20, but he was released about two months before that date.

Mr Choi first underwent parole review last February, but was found “unsuitable” and the review was suspended last month. This time he passed the fitness test for the third time.

The Justice Ministry pointed out that more than half of the members of the parole board were external members and that Choi himself did not want parole.

It appears that Mr. Choi was aware of the ongoing special investigations regarding the Deutsche Motors stock price manipulation case, in which he is suspected of being involved together with First Lady Kim Kun-hee.

The opposition party protested.

The Korean Democratic Party pointed out that “the image of Justice Minister Chin Yoon giving a Mother’s Day gift to the president’s mother-in-law instead” was “the reality of the Yoon Seok-yeol government, which privatized state power.” .

The Fatherland Innovation Party also asked, “Do you think President Choi’s parole decision is fair and based on common sense?” and then said: “When the 22nd National Assembly opens, we will look at the entire process of deciding on parole.”
