Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the amendment of the PECA Act

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the amendment of PECA Act 2016 to regulate social media. The establishment of Digital Rights Protection Agency under the proposed Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PICA) Act, 2024 was also approved.

The newly proposed PECA Bill 2024 will be tabled in Parliament after approval by the Cabinet, it has been decided to create a Digital Rights Protection Authority under the PECA Law Amendment Bill.

The Legal Reforms Committee of the Cabinet had recommended the proposed amendment bill and the establishment of the Digital Rights Protection Agency. The Ministry of Information Technology will be in charge of the proposed PICA Amendment Bill 2024 and the Digital Rights Protection Agency.

According to the report, the proposed Digital Rights Authority will regulate online content while the authority will investigate violations of the law on social media.

The Digital Rights Authority will be able to subpoena relevant persons and witnesses, in addition to making rules to enforce digital rights laws while promoting user safety and protecting fundamental rights in the online realm. And a reliable digital environment will be created.
