Ice Quake Studios has launched a closed beta test for Project S.U.N.D.I.A.L., an extraction shooter that adapts the high-stakes survival mechanics of titles like Escape from Tarkov into a top-down, pixel-art environment.
The Mechanics of Pixelated Survival
Players take on the role of a “Contractor,” specifically a “Hollow Hunter” serving Unit 13, tasked with navigating a post-apocalyptic European landscape. The core gameplay loop involves deploying into one of six designated zones to scavenge for supplies and complete contracts before reaching an extraction point. The game features semi-procedural generation for both terrain and events, ensuring that each expedition presents distinct challenges from bandits, looters, and mutated creatures known as “Hollows.”
Survival is dictated by a complex injury system that tracks damage to specific body parts. Players must manage wounds using medical supplies; failure to treat an injury results in persistent penalties, such as reduced mobility if a character is shot in the leg. As in other extraction-based titles, death results in the permanent loss of all gear carried into the zone.
Weapon Customization and Base Management
A primary feature of Project S.U.N.D.I.A.L. is its deep weapon assembly system. The game allows players to build and modify firearms using up to 15 individual components, including barrels, stocks, triggers, and sights. This focus on mechanical detail extends to the player’s “Hideout,” which functions as a central hub between expeditions. In the Hideout, players can upgrade facilities, utilize crafting stations, and manage a team of recruited survivors assigned to roles like medics, mechanics, farmers, or cooks.
Accessing the Closed Beta
Ice Quake Studios is currently accepting applications for the closed beta test. Prospective players can request access via the game’s official Discord server or through the PressEngine platform. While the studio has not yet confirmed a final release date, the game is listed as “Coming Soon” for Windows PC on its Steam store page. Media representatives and content creators may also contact the studio directly to request testing credentials.
