Islamabad – Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has launched a nationwide protest alleging irregularities in the elections held on the 8th of this month in Pakistan. Prohibitory orders were issued in Islamabad and Lahore to deal with the unrest. All prominent leaders including Imran’s lawyer Salman Akram Raja were arrested.

The PTI candidates fought as independent candidates to overcome the electoral ban and won 93 seats in the National Assembly. The PTI agitation started at a time when the main rivals PML-N and PPP were trying to form a government. He has started from Vanai in South Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where PTI has won a majority in the provincial assembly. Imran, who is in Adiala Jail, said that the country has seen the biggest electoral malpractice and PTI will fight against this injustice by being the opposition party in Parliament.

At the same time, Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chadha resigned, claiming that he showed irregularities to win over the losing candidates and that the Chief Election Commissioner and the Chief Justice tolerated this. Chadha made the claim by calling a press conference at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium and announcing his resignation under responsibility. He also said that the act of stabbing the country from behind had disturbed his sleep. Immediately after the media conference, the police arrived and arrested Chadha. Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi ordered an impartial inquiry.
