Inspiration Behind ‘Spike Island’
The song “Spike Island,” produced by James Ford, draws inspiration from Jason Buckle’s experience at The Stone Roses’ famed Spike Island concert. According to Pulp frontman jarvis Cocker, Buckle, who co-wrote the song, recounted the DJ’s repeated chanting of “Spike Island, come alive!” which resonated deeply and sparked the song’s concept, despite Cocker himself not attending the event.

Cocker provided a statement regarding the music video’s creation, detailing its experimental use of AI:
People who were interested in AI asked me if I had any ideas. The first thing that came to mind was to move the photos that Rankin and Donald took for ‘Different Class’. Initially, I was thinking of creating something like a “making-of-the-moment video” that would show how that photo was taken. But when I loaded the first one into the AI app, I realized that it was unachievable. So I decided to “leave it to the flow,” and decided to continue as I was led by the computer.
Cocker continued, describing the unsettling yet impactful experience of using AI to generate the video’s visuals, noting the surreal feeling of the real world transforming around him as a result.
Even when I went outside the house, I couldn’t help but feel that the surrounding habitat seemed to be transformed due to the footage produced by AI. That experience had a strong impact on me. I don’t know if I’ve returned to normal yet…
Cocker expressed gratitude to Julian House for post-production work and to Rankin and Donald Milne for allowing the use of their original photography. He lauded their 1995 work with Pulp as the “pinnacle of HI (Human Intelligence).”
‘More’: Pulp’s First Album in Decades
Cocker also shared details about “More,” the band’s first full-length release as 2001’s “we Love Life.”
When we resumed our tour in 2023, we were practicing a new song called “The Hymn of the North” in between soundchecks… After that, songs to be included in the album were born one after another in the first half of 2024. some of these songs revive ideas that have been around sence the last century. One song was composed by Richard Hawley. The other song was composed by Jason Buckle. There are also songs in which the Eno family (Brian Eno and others) perform the backing chorus. Richard Jones created the string arrangement, which was performed by Elysian collective.
The album was recorded in Walthamstow, London, over three weeks in November 2024, making it the fastest-completed album in Pulp’s history. Cocker dedicated the album to Steve mackey and emphasized the collaborative effort of musicians from across the UK.
This work was created by four people from northern England and was completed with the cooperation of five friends from all over the UK.I don’t use any AI.
