Putin sees war in Ukraine as a “matter of life or death”

5:17 p.m.: According to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin, Russia considers the situation around Ukraine to be “vital.” For the West, however, it is just a question of tactics, says Putin in an interview on state television, from which the state agency Tass quotes. While the West is taking tactical positions around Ukraine, for his country it is “a matter of fate, a question of life or death.” If the West didn’t get involved, “the war would have ended a year and a half ago.”

“We moved from initially peaceful measures to military instruments and tried to end this conflict peacefully,” Putin claims. And: Russia is still ready to negotiate a peace solution.

The positions of Moscow and Kiev on a possible peace solution differ widely. While Kiev insists on the return of all occupied territories, including the Crimean peninsula, Russia wants to keep the conquered territories that it has already integrated into its national territory.
