Quad Leaders Condemn North Korea’s Pursuit of Nuclear Weapons
Leaders of the Quad, a four-party security advisory body comprising the US, Japan, Australia, and India, have unanimously criticized North Korea’s continued nuclear and missile threats.
President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a joint statement after the Quad summit, condemning North Korea’s launch of ballistic missiles and its pursuit of nuclear weapons in violation of several United Nations Security Council resolutions.
“We condemn North Korea’s destabilizing ballistic missile launches and its continued pursuit of nuclear weapons in violation of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions (UNSCRs). These launches are a serious threat to international peace and stability. We urge North Korea to adhere to all its obligations under the UNSCRs, refrain from further provocations and engage in meaningful dialogue.”
Reaffirming Commitment to Complete Denuclearization
The Quad leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and urged all countries to fully implement these Security Council resolutions.
They also emphasized the need to prevent the proliferation of North Korea’s nuclear and missile-related technology within and outside the region.
Concerns about Military Cooperation with North Korea
The Quad leaders expressed serious concerns about countries deepening military cooperation with North Korea, which they said directly undermines the international non-proliferation system.
“We express great concern about countries deepening military cooperation with North Korea, which directly undermines the global non-proliferation regime.”
Concerns about the Situation in the East and South China Seas and Ukraine
The Quad leaders emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region and expressed deep concern about the situation in the East and South China Seas.
They also expressed concern about the war taking place in Ukraine, including its terrible and tragic humanitarian consequences, and warned that the use and threat of use of nuclear weapons in war is unacceptable.
US-Japan Summit Discusses US-ROK-Japan Cooperation and North Korean Nuclear Threat
President Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held a bilateral meeting before the Quad summit and made clear their intention to strengthen the US-Japan alliance and trilateral cooperation between the US, Korea, and Japan.
The two leaders emphasized that the alliance between the United States and Japan is the cornerstone of peace and prosperity in the region.
