Ram Reverses Course on All-Electric Truck Amidst Shifting EV Landscape
Auburn Hills, MI – In a notable shift reflecting the evolving electric vehicle (EV) market, stellantis’ Ram brand has announced the cancellation of its plans to develop a full-size, all-electric Ram 1500 pickup truck. The decision, revealed in a statement Friday, comes as the automaker reassesses its product strategy in response to slowing demand for full-size battery electric trucks in North America.
“As demand for full-size battery electric trucks slows in North America,Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy and will discontinue advancement of a full-size BEV pickup,” a company spokesperson confirmed.
This declaration marks a notable change in direction for Ram, which had previously delayed the launch of the all-electric truck twice, with initial expectations placing its arrival on the market by the end of 2024.
Though, Ram isn’t abandoning the electric truck segment entirely. The company remains committed to launching an extended-range electric truck, equipped with both an electric generator and a gas engine, slated for release next year. This model, previously known as the “Ramcharger,” will now be branded as the “Ram 1500 REV.”
The decision to pivot away from a full-size BEV pickup reflects broader trends within the automotive industry. Automakers across the board are grappling with a slower-than-anticipated adoption rate of electric vehicles. This shift in consumer demand has prompted many companies to re-evaluate thier EV strategies and prioritize hybrid or extended-range options.
The leadership at Stellantis is also undergoing a change. Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis, who recently returned from retirement, is spearheading an aggressive turnaround for the brand. Moreover, new Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa, who took the helm in late July, has pledged to make “the tough decisions needed to re-establish profitable growth and considerably improved results,” signaling a willingness to adapt to the changing market dynamics.
The cancellation of the all-electric Ram 1500 also arrives amidst a shifting political landscape. the Trump administration has expressed intentions to roll back many of former president Joe Biden’s initiatives aimed at accelerating the transition to electric vehicles, including the elimination of tax credits for EV purchases.
While the future of full-size electric pickup trucks remains uncertain, Ram’s decision to focus on an extended-range model demonstrates a commitment to offering consumers a range of options that cater to their evolving needs and preferences. The Ram 1500 REV represents a pragmatic approach, combining the benefits of electric power with the reliability and range of a traditional gasoline engine. This strategic shift positions Ram to navigate the complexities of the current EV market while continuing to deliver innovative and capable trucks to its loyal customer base.
