Recently, a lemon from over 300 years ago was put up for sale at an auction in England.

According to the New York Post on the 7th (local time), a 285-year-old lemon was sold for about 2.4 million won at an auction held by Newport auction house, ‘Bruteels Auctioneers & Valuers’.

This lemon was found inside an antique cabinet made in the 19th century. The lemon had been exposed to air for a long time and its skin had turned dark brown. However, it was confirmed that no parts were rotted or damaged.

An inscription on the lemon peel reads, “The gift of Mr. Pi Ru Francini to Miss E. Baxter November 4, 1739.” The media explained, “These lemons may have come to the UK from India as a romantic gift.”

“We thought it would be fun, so we put the lemon up for auction with an estimate of 40 to 60 pounds (about 67,000 to 100,000 won),” explained auctioneer David Brutel. The lemon was eventually sold for 1,416 pounds (about 2.38 million won), more than 20 times the estimated price.

The media said, “It is very rare for food to survive for three centuries.” Brtel also said, “You’ll never see something like this at auction again.”

A 19th century cabinet containing lemons was also auctioned, but sold for 32 pounds (about 54,000 won).
