Ravi Shastri warns Shubman Gill after disappointing performance in second Test against England

Visakhapatnam: Former coach Ravi Shastri has warned Indian cricketer Shubman Gill, who is disappointing in the second Test against England. Shastri recalled that India’s Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara had been producing extraordinary performances in the Ranji Trophy while Gill had failed to capitalize on opportunities. Gill got off to a good start but managed to score just 34 runs in the second Test. This was followed by Shastri’s comment.

“India has a young team now. They need to prove their mettle. But don’t forget that Cheteshwar Pujara is staying outside. He is in great form in the current Ranji season. Pujara is on the selectors’ radar at the moment,’ Shastri pointed out. Shastri’s response was while commenting on the Visakhapatnam Test.

Gill managed to get off to a good start in Visakhapatnam this time. The player reached 34 runs off 46 balls. But Gill had to return shortly after being caught by wicketkeeper Ben Fox off James Anders. With the early return of captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, who came in at the top one down, gave hope, but the player disappointed again.

With the embarrassment of not having crossed 50 once in the last 11 innings, there were strong calls for Gill to be dropped from the Test team. Still, Gill was played only in the second Test in the absence of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja.

Meanwhile, Pujara, who was dropped from India’s Test team after last year’s World Test Championship, is in superb form in the Ranji Trophy. Pujara has scored 538 runs at an average of 89.66 from seven Ranji innings, including a double century.
