Ray J’s recent Valentine’s Day concert in Shreveport, Louisiana, sparked concern among fans after videos surfaced appearing to show blood running from his eyes. The performance comes less than a month after the singer revealed the severity of his ongoing health struggles, including a heart condition he says is currently functioning at only 25 percent.
Footage from the show depicts Ray J, wearing black sunglasses, handing out roses to audience members while a red liquid streamed down his right cheek. He later removed the sunglasses to reveal dried blood beneath both eyes. During the performance, he also took off his shirt, revealing a heart monitor taped to his chest.
Despite the alarming visuals, Ray J attempted to reassure those present, telling a friend backstage, “I’ve been getting better.” However, the incident has fueled renewed anxieties about his health, particularly following his public disclosure of a near-fatal battle with pneumonia and subsequent heart issues.
In late , Ray J shared a video on Instagram detailing his condition, stating, “My heart’s only beating 25 percent, but as long as I stay focused and stay on the right path, everything will be all right.” He also described the right side of his heart as “like, black. It’s like done.” He acknowledged his health was “not OK” and expressed gratitude for the support and prayers he’d received.
The singer attributed his heart problems to past excessive use of alcohol and Adderall, stating in a livestream, “I thought I could handle all the alcohol, I could handle all the Adderall.” Doctors reportedly informed him he may soon require a pacemaker or defibrillator, with a follow-up appointment scheduled shortly after his initial hospitalization.
Adding a layer of complexity to the situation, Tommy Nard II of Nard Multimedia Group, who was backstage at the Shreveport concert, suggested the incident may have been staged. He told local news station KTAL that Ray J was “literally put[ting] on the fake blood and go[ing] out there,” characterizing the performance as “all theatrical.”
However, a concertgoer who spoke with KTAL expressed genuine concern, describing it as “very concerning to see blood, what appeared to be blood, coming from his eyes.”
Ray J, whose full name is William Ray Norwood Jr., had been under doctor’s orders to remain on bed rest and abstain from drugs and alcohol, according to a report from TMZ. He was reportedly taking eight medications related to his heart condition.
The singer’s health struggles come after a period of public scrutiny and personal challenges. He shares two children, Melody and Epik, with his estranged wife, Princess Love. He previously alluded to the seriousness of his condition in a Facebook post leading up to the Valentine’s Day concert, writing, “I’m putting my life on the line for this show!!”
In a recent Instagram story posted on , Ray J shared a quote: “‘If you want to know who your real friends & family are, lose your job, get sick, or go through hard times. You’ll see clearly.’”
As of Tuesday, a representative for Ray J had not responded to requests for comment regarding the concert and his current health status. The incident raises questions about the balance between artistic expression, personal health, and the pressures of performing while facing serious medical challenges.
