In relation to this, TechCrunch, an American information technology (IT) media outlet, said, “SpaceX has set another milestone.”
TechCrunch reported that SpaceX achieved 1 million subscribers in December 2022 after launching Starlink beta (pilot) service in October 2020.
In addition, the number of subscribers exceeded 2 million in September last year and 3 million in May this year. Approximately 1 million new customers have been secured since the end of May.
Currently, the Starlink satellite network consists of nearly 6,000 communication satellites.
Major customers include individuals who want to use the Internet in places where terrestrial communication networks are not available, as well as major airlines that provide Internet for in-flight passenger aircraft and companies that operate cruise ships.
According to Quilty Space, an industry market analysis company, the Starlink business is expected to generate sales of $6.6 billion (approximately 8.64 trillion won) this year. Sales increased by 371.43% from $1.4 billion (approximately 1.83 trillion won) just two years ago.
Other big techs are also trying to promote satellite Internet business, but the gap with Starlink has become too big. Amazon, the world’s largest e-commerce company, is also pursuing ‘Project Kuiper’, a satellite Internet business, but has not yet launched commercial services.
In relation to this, TechCrunch pointed out, “Starlink has now become an undisputed giant in the satellite Internet industry.”
