Mr Nam, indicted on charges of stealing the security deposits of more than 190 tenants in Incheon, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Nine people, including a real estate agent and a broker assistant, who conspired with Mr. Nam, were also sentenced to prison.

Mr Nam, who committed a real estate fraud in the Michuhol-gu area of Incheon, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, the maximum sentence for fraud.
An order was subsequently issued to collect 11.5 billion won in criminal proceeds.
Mr. Nam and his nine accomplices, including a broker assistant, indicted on charges of conspiring to commit rental fraud, were each sentenced to between 4 and 13 years in prison.
Since March 2021, these gangs have been indicted on charges of signing a rental contract without willingness to return the deposit and stealing 14.8 billion won in deposits from 191 tenants.
The court said: “The motive and method of the crime was poor as it targeted vulnerable groups such as those new to society, newlyweds and the elderly.”
Furthermore, we read in the justification for the sentence: “The four victims between the ages of 20 and 30 made extreme choices by violating the stability of housing, which is one of the essential means of food, clothing and shelter. However, they do not regret it of one’s own mistakes, so there is a high risk of recidivism.”
The court also said that there is a lack of means to regulate jeonse fraud crimes and added: “We propose to the legislature to revise the law on appropriate detention requirements and punishment for fraud crimes.”
The total amount charged by Mr. Nam and his group for the lease fraud is 45.3 billion won, but only the first 14.8 billion won indicted have been sentenced today, and a trial is underway separate for the remaining 30 billion won.
Previously, the prosecution had indicted 35 members of Mr Nam’s group and applied the crime of “organizing a criminal group” to 18 of them for the first time in a rental fraud crime.
