Mexican actress Ana Ophelia Murguia, who voiced the role of ‘Mama Coco’, the grandmother in Disney Pixar’s popular animated film ‘Coco’, has died aged 90.

According to the Associated Press on the 1st (local time), Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts announced the news of Murguia’s death in a statement on December 31st last year, the day before. However, the exact cause of death was not disclosed.

“Murguia leaves a huge void on the stage of our country,” Culture Minister Alejandra Frausto Guerrero said in a statement.

Murguia has been acting across a variety of genres, including film, television, and theatre, for 60 years. He has established himself as a representative actor of his time and one of the most popular actors in Mexico.

The Pixar film ‘Coco’ made Murguia known to the world. In this film, she played the role of Mama Coco, the great-grandmother of Miguel, the boy protagonist, who travels to the ‘world of the dead’ on Day of the Dead, a holiday in Mexico. In the film, the scene where Miguel and Mama Coco sing the song ‘Remember Me’ together was considered a famous scene by audiences.

Last April, the National Autonomous University of Mexico awarded Murguia a medal for leaving an “indelible mark” on Mexican film and theater. At the time, Murguia said after receiving the medal, “This job was my life and my passion. “I liked this job,” he said.
