Popular Korean Singer Myeong Guk-hwan Passes Away at 96

The Korean Singers Association has recently announced the unfortunate passing of Myeong Guk-hwan, a beloved veteran singer from the 1950s. Known for his iconic songs like “Arizona Cowboy,” Myeong Guk-hwan left a lasting impact on the music industry. He breathed his last breath on the 19th of last month, at the age of 96, in a nursing hospital in Namdong-gu, Incheon.

Born in 1927, Myeong Guk-hwan gained immense popularity in the 1950s with his soul-stirring melodies such as ‘Baekmaya Ujimara’, ‘Arizona Cowboy’, and ‘The Carriage Goes to My Hometown’. These songs vividly captured the pain and struggles of displaced individuals after the Korean War. Aside from his own compositions, he also contributed to the success of the film ‘Kim Sat-gat’ by singing its theme song, ‘The Wandering Poet Kim Sat-gat’ in 1957. In recognition of his exceptional talent, Myeong Guk-hwan was honored with the Achievement Award at the 39th Singer Day in 2005.

Funeral arrangements and tribute

The mortuary for the late singer will be set up at Hu&U Hospital’s funeral hall in Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do starting from the 3rd of January. The Korean Singers Association, deeply saddened by the loss, will oversee the funeral proceedings. The funeral service is scheduled for the morning of the 4th, and Jangji, a member of the National Goesan Protection Bureau, will be officiating the ceremony.

It was known late that Myeong Guk-hwan (pictured), a veteran singer who was much loved in the 1950s with songs like “Arizona Cowboy,” died last month. 96 years old.

According to the Korean Singer Association on the 2nd, Myung Guk-hwan died at 11:50 am on the 19th of last month at a nursing hospital in Namdong-gu, Incheon. The deceased is said to have been living alone for a long time.

The deceased, born in 1927, became popular in the 1950s with songs such as ‘Baekmaya Ujimara’, ‘Arizona Cowboy’, and ‘The Carriage Goes to My Hometown’. These songs contain the pain of displaced people after the Korean War. In 1957, he sang ‘The Wandering Poet Kim Sat-gat’, the theme song of the film ‘Kim Sat-gat’, and made it popular. In 2005, he received the Achievement Award at the 39th Singer Day.

The mortuary will be prepared at the funeral hall of Hu&U Hospital in Bucheon, Gyeonggi-do on the 3rd. The Korean Singers Association was in charge of the funeral. The funeral is on the morning of the 4th, and Jangji is a member of the National Goesan Protection Bureau.
