On September 25, 2024, American engineering software company Altair announced its participation in the “PIVOT (Performance Integrated Vehicle Optimization Technology)” project supported by the British innovation agency Innovate UK and the Advanced Propulsion Center (APC).

The PIVOT project will be led by Sarginsons Industries, a British company with aluminum casting technology. In addition to Altair, participating partners include Britain’s Aston Martin, Brunel University London, and multinational metal recycling company GESCRAP.

The initiative will develop software that combines casting simulation, topology optimization and AI to design automotive parts that are optimized for weight, structural performance and manufacturability. This technology reduces the weight of cast aluminum parts by up to 30% while maintaining performance requirements.

PIVOT uses 100% recycled aluminum to reduce carbon emissions from manufacturing parts by up to 95%. Brunel University’s grain refinement technology overcomes the mechanical weaknesses of recycled aluminum, allowing the recycled alloy to be used in cast parts such as car chassis.

PIVOT’s role is to demonstrate the transformation that AI, recycled materials and advanced foundry processes are taking on the auto manufacturing process, all while reducing environmental impact. It is expected that OEMs and foundries will be able to adopt more efficient and sustainable production methods in the coming years.
