Richard Chamberlain, ‘Dr. Kildare’ and ‘Shogun’ Star, Dies at 90

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Richard Chamberlain, the actor who captivated audiences as the compassionate Dr. Kildare in the 1960s and later reigned as the “King of the Miniseries,” has died at the age of 90.

Chamberlain passed away Saturday night in Waimanalo, Hawaii, due to complications following a stroke, according to his publicist, Harlan Boll.

Martin Rabbett, his lifelong partner, released a statement saying, “Our beloved richard is now free and soaring among those who have gone before us. We were blessed to have encountered such an amazing and loving soul. Love is eternal, and our love is beneath its wings, lifting it toward its next grand adventure.”

From Dr. Kildare to miniseries Icon

With his classic good looks and romantic charm, Chamberlain quickly became a teen idol during his time on “Dr. Kildare,” which aired from 1961 to 1966. Photoplay magazine named him the most popular male star for three consecutive years, from 1963 to 1965.

Chamberlain’s career experienced a resurgence in the late 1970s and 80s when he starred in several highly successful miniseries. This string of hits earned him the moniker “King of the Miniseries.”

Breaking Barriers

Chamberlain publicly acknowledged his homosexuality in 2003 with the release of his autobiography, “Shattered Love,” confirming what had long been speculated within Hollywood circles.

Miniseries Success

In 1978, Chamberlain cemented his status as the “king of the Television Miniseries” with his starring role in “Centennial,” a sprawling 24-hour production based on James Michener’s novel. He followed this success in 1980 with “Shogun,” another lavish miniseries adapted from James Clavell’s novel about an American navigating feudal Japan.

His most meaningful miniseries triumph came in 1983 with “The Thorn Birds,” a sweeping drama based on Colleen McCullough’s best-selling novel. Chamberlain portrayed Father Ralph de Bricassart, an Australian Roman Catholic priest who falls in love with Meggie Cleary (Rachel Ward). The ABC production, which also featured Barbara Stanwyck, reportedly drew 100 million viewers.

Chamberlain received Golden Globe awards for his performances in “Shogun” and “The Thorn birds.” He had previously won a Golden Globe for “Dr.Kildare.”

Stage and Screen

As the popularity of miniseries waned, Chamberlain transitioned to the theater, showcasing his vocal talents. He played Henry Higgins in a 1994 Broadway revival of “My Fair Lady” and Captain Von Trapp in a 1999 revival of “The Sound of Music.”

He reprised his role as Father de Bricassart in the 1996 television film “The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years.”

Chamberlain also appeared in numerous films, including “The music Lovers” (as Tchaikovsky), “The Madwoman of Chaillot,” “The Towering Inferno,” and “The Three musketeers” and its sequels.

Early Career and “Dr. Kildare” Fame

The “Dr. Kildare” series was based on a series of successful films from the 1930s and 40s that starred Lew Ayres in the title role.

Chamberlain’s appealing looks propelled him to stardom almost overnight. Another medical drama, “Ben Casey,” also debuted that season and made its star, Vince Edwards, a household name.

The popularity of these shows led to trends like the “Ben Casey shirt” and both programs’ theme songs reaching the pop music charts.Chamberlain himself sang the “dr. Kildare” theme song. There was even a pop song titled “Dr. kildare! Dr. Casey! You’re Wanted for Consultation.”

Navigating Hollywood

In his autobiography, Chamberlain revealed the pressures he faced to conceal his sexuality. He recounted attending film premieres and public events with actresses at the request of studio executives and deflecting questions about marriage with the standard reply: “Marrying would be great, but I am terribly busy now.”

in an interview with NBC, Chamberlain said, “when I grew up, being gay, being effeminate or something was just forbidden. I hated myself and feared that part of me intensely, and I had to hide it.”

His book also detailed a challenging childhood and a father struggling with alcoholism. Chamberlain expressed that writing the book helped him release a significant emotional burden and that he felt relieved to no longer hide his true self.

“I played a cat and mouse game with the press. Game over,” Chamberlain said, who was in a long-term relationship with actor Martin Rabbett.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born George Richard Chamberlain in Beverly Hills on March 31, 1934, he initially studied painting at Pomona College. After serving in the Korean War, Chamberlain decided to pursue acting.

He studied voice and drama and, after guest appearances on several television shows and in the 1960 film “The Secret of the Purple Reef,” he landed the role of Dr. Kildare.

After “Dr. Kildare” was canceled, Chamberlain found it challenging to escape the image of the young doctor.

He moved to England for a period to find work and hone his acting skills. While there, he appeared in three films directed by Richard Lester: “petulia” (1968), “The Three Musketeers” (1973), and “The Four Musketeers” (1974).He reunited with Lester in 1989 for “The Return of the Musketeers,” again playing Aramis.

In 1969, Chamberlain starred in “Hamlet” at the Birmingham Repertory Company in England and reprised the role in a television adaptation that aired on NBC in the United States. He also played Octavius in a film version of “Julius Caesar,” co-starring Charlton Heston and Jason Robards.

Chamberlain continued to act into the 21st century, appearing on television shows such as “Will & grace,” “The Drew Carey Show,” and “Touched by an Angel.”
